Dogs On the Go

I came across this when looking for something else.

OK I have to confess - I know this is not really viable as a portable pet carrier for everyday use - but it is so very funny. I've watched this dozens of time and it still makes me smile, so I just had to share it with you.

Oh - and in case anyone is not sure, I have taken the time to thoroughly research this.  Sadly it is not airline approved!

Can't think why.

Dog Travel Accessories: Safety and Comfort

With the majority of dog owners taking their dogs with them on road trips, whether local or long-distance, it is important to remember the simple steps to be taken to ensure your dog remains safe and comfortable.

That requires a little planning ahead and the right dog travel accessories.

In a press release announcing the results of a joint study, The Hartford and the American Kennel Club recommend dog owners follow these important tips before getting into the car with man's best friend:

Traveling with Rover: Canine Car Safety Tips

    On the Road:

-- Secure your dog: A crate is the safest place for your dog to be while traveling in the car. During an accident a loose dog can become a projectile and not only injure himself, but injure human occupants. Secure the crate in the middle or rear of the vehicle. A carrier or harness that attaches to the seat belt in the back passenger seat is a safe option. Pet supply stores sell harnesses, and carry a range of sizes that will fit most dogs. No animal should ever ride loose in the bed of a pick-up truck, which can lead to serious injuries or death in the event of an accident.

-- Take a break: On long road trips dogs need a potty break more often than when left home alone. Ideally stopping every 3 hours for a 30 minute break gives Fido time to do his business, stretch his legs, get some water and take in some fresh air and scenery.

-- Close the window: To prevent ear and eye injuries do not allow your pet to stick his head out the car window.

-- On hot days, never leave your pet unattended: Hot cars can kill dogs so never leave your pet unattended in the car on hot days. Temperatures can rise quickly, causing heat stroke or death even with windows open.

Thinking ahead and planning a journey with your dog is vital. Making sure the journey is not rushed and that there is enough time to care for your dog is essential. Being prepared with the right dog travel accessories, and using them sensibly, is of equal importance.

Where can I buy a very large portable dog carrier?

I have a Great Dane that I want to take across the country using air travel.

I'm trying to find anybody that sells extra large portable dog carriers, or something I can customize. Finding dog carriers for airline travel is not so bad, but its not easy for a dog as large as mine.

      Can anybody help?

Moving House with a Portable Cat Carrier

I will soon be moving house and taking my cat with me. However she is very nervous gets stressed out if I do anything which she thinks I am going to carry her outside.

I was thinking of putting her in a cat carrier whilst in the house and then not letting her out until we get to our new home. This would mean she would be in the carrier for up to 7 hours.

Would this be too long and as she is a nervous will she find that too stressful. If it is too long is there any kind of medicine I could give her to keep her calm.

          Car Travel With Your Dog

This video reminds us of the vital safety issues that you should ensure you take care of when taking your dog on a car journey.

Under no circumstances should your dog be unrestrained in the car - not only because he might disturb you, but because he may well suffer severe injury if you crash.

The best place is in a portable pet carrier behind the rear seats if that is possible, if not then a strong harness attached to the seat belts is the next best option.

Don't forget that pet hairs can be very difficult to remove, so seat coverings are recommended.

Finally pet travel should always be planned ahead if any appreciable distance is to be covered - taking water and food and making sure adequate and frequent stops are included is vital.

My husband got orders to move to Germany. We have two small dogs. A rat terrier/chihuahua who is 5 and healthy, and a 16-17 yr old chihuahua, who has congestive heart failure & is currently on medication. She cannot be vaccinated due to her age & health. Am I going to have to leave her with family? Do you think it's possible to obtain some sort of waiver/form to allow her in the cabin with my husband and I ?
The thought of parting with her breaks my heart.
***Thanks so much for the info & your input. I know my Dezi will be in good hand with my Mom & brother. I don't want to put her in harms way for my sake, It's just hard to let go she has been by my side since I was in the 5th grade. Again, thanks so much for all the information!

Lately, my BABY (cat) has been a little meaner, etc. the last time i tried to pick her up and put her in her carrier, she actually hissed and scratched me. It wasn't vicious attack mode or anything. she usually puts up a little fight but nothing that stopped me from trying to get her into the carrier like now.

I need to take her to get her nails clipped, i can't clip them myself and now it seems i can't have them clipped anymore.

              any suggestions.

I'm looking for a pet that would be OK with coming with me on trips (by air or car). Most will probably be week-long excursions once or twice a month. I'm assuming a dog or cat would be out (unless maybe there's a certain breed I don't know about that isn't easily fazed?). What kind of laid-back buddy should I get?

How can I prevent my dog from getting car sick?

I have 3 dogs - I have two Chihuahuas, and one Husky. One of the Chihuahuas are prone to car sickness. Every time we go on a trip longer than 45 minutes, she keeps drooling and howling for comfort.

We tried Dramamine, ginger snaps, dog carriers, and lots of other stuff but they all didn't work.

Is there anything else we can try? We're going to New York next week and it will require an 18-hour car ride.

                            Air travel with dogs?

I have a JRT but she's small for her breed (13 lbs). I was wondering what are the travel restrictions for air travel with pets in the cabin? I would love to travel with her but not if she has to go in the cargo area. Does any one know the weight/height requirements for taking your pet in the cabin? And what is the average cost? Thanks.

I am flying to Alaska here in 6 months and I need to take my 10 month old shih tzu with me. I absolutely refuse to send him cargo, so naturally I need to figure out where i can find a carrier that will allow him to fit easily under the front of my seat.
He weights 10 pounds. Any suggestions or have you personally used something that has worked well for you?
I already know I can't just go to any pet store to get one. There are requirements that need to be met.

Has anyone actually used a specific brand/type that has worked?

                                Emmie Cat Squawks Around.

We recently adopted Emmie (formerly Ember) from Toronto Cat Rescue, and she's been a bright, affectionate, and chatty addition to our home. After looking around on the TCR website, out of over a hundred cats we found Emmie. Something clicked and we both fell in love with her sweet face and her heartbreaking little story. I sent off an email to find out more information about her and the adoption process and within a day or two we had done a short phone interview (to find out if we'd be a suitable home for dear Emmiecat) and the next day we were heading out of the GTA to meet Emmie and see if she'd like us (and vice versa.) She was fostered by an amazing family, home to fosters, former rescues that had found their forever home, and big loud dogs. She was shy at first, and hid in the corner of a stairwell, but soon she warmed up to us. Within the span of an hour, we were playing with her, and she was sprawled out on us, snuggling up and purring. So we put her in the cat carrier and took her to her forever home. And this snuggleball of love fits right in. Please consider giving a shelter or rescue cat a chance by adopting or fostering a rescue. Pet microchip during air traveling….?

Hello, does anyone know what pet microchip is for a pet when one travels? I would like to have a kitten brought up from Eu to the US, british shorthair. Yet, the breeder tells me that the kitten needs to be chipped before it can travel. I feel very yucky about the whole idea since they would put some chip under the baby's skin -- such a cruelty. I was told that there is no way to avoid the procedure. Can this chip be taken out by the vet when the kitten gets here? I'd appreciate any thoughts/ comments. Thank you so much !

He was hopping around on the ground in my yard and didn't seem to want to fly and his breathing seems a little difficult. I have fed him for around 5 years so I know he is at least that old. I have him in a dog carrier but don't know what to do next. Would love some advice. Thanks.

The Cat Carrier Challenge of 8-11-11.wmv

How I got my cats into the carrier to go to the vet. Spunky Doodle usually walks right in but not today. I couldn't use food with her because she was going under anesthesia for her teeth cleaning. Manny hates the carrier so for a week I had it sitting in my den and every morning, would throw in some food which he went for. The practice paid off as you can see in this video.
